Damage Report

Damages to Staff and Users

• The library was open at the time of the earthquake, so many users were present.

Everybody was ushered to a designated shelter. There were no damages to users and staff.

Damages to the Facility

• Entry has been permitted after a building inspection (as of March 35)

1. Open access shelves on the 1st and 2nd floor: fallen tiles in the interior walls, several toppled shelves, damage to PC for office work purposes.
2. Closed-shelves on the 3rd and 4rth floor: Virtually no damage to the shelves, interior walls cracked.
3. Closed-shelves on the M3rd and M4rth floor (layered floors): distortion of shelves (danger of partial collapse), damage to shockproof reinforcing bars, interior walls cracked.
4. Basement library: No visible damage.
5. Office: Partial damage to air conditioning vents, interior walls and floor cracked.
6. Storage space for valuable material：Broken glass in the interior of the display case.

• Recovery of gas, electricity, water supply completed (as of April 19, 2011)

Damages to the library collection

1. Open access shelves on the 1st and 2nd floor：1st floor→Virtually no fallen material.　2nd floor→Out of the approximately 20,000 library books, about half have fallen from their shelves.
2. Closed-shelves on the 3rd and 4rth floor:About half of the books have fallen from their shelves.
3. Closed-shelves on the M3rd and M4rth floor (layered floors)）：About half of the books have fallen from the shelves.
4. Basement library：approximately a tenth to a fifth of the books have fallen from the shelves.
5. Storage space for valuable material：Virtually no damage to material within the display case. Of the material stored in the cabinet (with folding double doors), approximately half have burst out, causing damage to their bindings.

Administrative Information

• Open as of May 9th (Monday). Open hours are 9:00-18:00, except on Saturdays the open hours are 9:00-18:00 (Homepage updated on 2011-04-22).
• The latest information is provided at all times at Official Home Page.

As of April 19, 2011, the recovery process, the reconstruction of the library interior and the repairing of shelves are under way.

The library is scheduled to open open partially in time with the commencement of classes (open hours will be shortened).

The recovery process, the reconstruction of the library interior and the repairing of shelves in the closed-shelf stacks will not be completed by the commencement of classes, so only open access shelves will be available for the time being.
