Expression of Condolence to our Japanese Colleagues 21 March 2011 - COAR, with representatives from around the world, wishes to send our deepest condolences to our Japanese colleagues, their families, and to all of the Japanese people following the disastrous events following the earthquake and tsunami that has stuck their country. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the devastation and by the loss of life – the full scale of which will take many weeks to comprehend.

From our entire membership, we would like to convey our solidarity, support, and any specific help during this difficult time. We stand by to assist in any way we can.

I'm the Chair of SLA's Emergency Preparedness & Recovery Advisory Council.
SLA and its members are very much interested and concerned about the situation in Japan
and are curious about what we can do to help libraries and librarians in the affected areas.
We can certainly advertise the link for folks in the US to donate to the Red Cross effort
to assist survivors, but beyond that are there other opportunities where we can assist libraries and librarians?
We have assisted librarians in New Zealand by providing links to consultants and specialists
in recovering quake damaged library materials.

The past few days we have been witnessing the devastating consequences of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. Many homes and lives have been lost. We sincerely hope that you, your friends and relatives are safe, and that all those who are affected, will have the courage and the strength to overcome the sorrow and suffering. It is painful to see how the lives of so many people were destroyed in a matter of seconds. Each time I watch the scenes of the tsunami, washing away houses, buildings or cars, I wonder whether perhaps there might have been among the victims someone you used to know. This is a very sad time not only for the Japanese, but also all those who in one way or another have a connection with the country. Our thoughts are with all those who suffer.

Please know that your colleagues in Boulder, Colorado are thinking of you and hoping the damage to your precious institutions is able to be minimized. But we know some libraries are probably totally destroyed and we are eager to help when the proper course of action can be discerned.

Here in Boulder, we had many months ago planned an Origami Festival for Sunday, March 13 and it was very successful, with many attendees eager to learn to make origami models, but also eager to know how they might help you. We had names of organizations they could contribute to for immediate disaster relief, (ie RED CROSS) but I’m sure MANY of them would like to contribute to the library rebuilding efforts once they are underway.

Personally, my own thoughts are with all of you suffering in Japan every hour. Please know that your friends in the U.S. care and want to help.

2011年3月11日の東北関東大震災のあと、海外の博物館関係者から安否確認の問い合わせがあった。当初、個人的な回答をしていたが、東日本全体の被害状況に鑑み、ＩＣＯＭのメーリングリスト経由で「被災状況についてはこれから報告する」旨の第一報を報告し、日本の状況を簡単に報じた。第二報は、日本にいる外国人博物館関係者のためにウェブサイトの情報を伝達した。

First of all, on behalf of Japanese museum colleagues, I appreciate your many sympathetic e-mails. We are very much encouraged by your e-mails and we shared your concerned voices.

Last week, on 11 March, several catastrophic earthquakes in Northeastern region of Japan were happened. Because of this natural disaster, many villages and (of course, many cultural/ natural heritages including many museums) were disappeared from this land. At the time being, we do not know how size of these damages, but we will know later.　Under these difficult situations, lifeline such as electricity, gas, road, are the first priority, and parallely food-supply, but unfortunately, probably you know, Nuclear Power Plant are also damaged. Therefore we have no time to think of cultural properties by the government.　But I have to report to all museum professions, over the world, that we Japanese museum professions, including the museums association and academy like a JMMA, have already began to set up the website to receive the all the information of damaged museums, lost cultural properties (and unfortunately the personnel.) We began to talk with Japanese ministry of education as well as Cultural Agency what we should do next for preserving the museum world in Japan.

Maybe it will take a much time to make an official report of these all damages, but thanks to your sympathetic e-mails, we are now very much encouraged. And once again we have to confront the natural disaster, to face to the risk, to stand up to the earthquake, to venture to the damaged sites and the investigations of cultural properties.

As a chair, I worked for Japanese governmental Task Force Team to set up the ‘Risk management manual for museum’ during 3 years. But to be honest, in front of these catastrophes, there is no meaning. How vulnerable we are !

I reflect myself and later I will contribute to share these experiences with you. I send this e-mail in order to relieve your concerns. Thanks again and I really hope to see you soon with a smile.

After the terrible shock knowing the difficult situation in Japan, resulting from the natural disasters, I would like to say that the Japanese people have been a true example of courage, discipline and social consciousness. Never has a nation responded to a tragedy with such sense of community. I beleive, all people have admired your courage and only hope that Japan recovers as soon as it deserves. Since 1986 I live in Puerto Rico, as a former director of Ponce Art Museum (reknown in Japan by its 19 century British Pre-Rafaelite’s Collection), I am developing the new Art Museum and the Graduate Program of Museum Study, at the Caribbean University in Puerto Rico. On behalf of the Museum Association of Puerto Rico and myself, I express my very deepest and most sincerest regret for the difficulties that our people and museums are experiencing. I am very sorry to hear that some of the museums has been destroyed and maybe many of its beautiful collection have disappeared. Please let me know what we can do for you.
